RV wheels and tires are not only critical to getting you where you want to be, but they are critical to your safety on the road, so making sure that they are in good shape, and ready to handle the road you are about to travel is important.
Your RV wheels are just like any other wheels on any vehicle in that they also need to be maintained and replaced when necessary. The wheels and tires of your RV are critical elements that need to be checked regularly and taken care of because if they are damaged, that means you won’t be going anywhere at all.
Of course, wheels that are properly maintained will look good, and that goes a long way towards improving the overall appearance of your RV. It doesn’t matter if the wheels are aftermarket or not; wheels and tires covered in dust and grime will always look like eyesores. You can clean your RV wheels as you would care for the wheels of a car or any other vehicle, and you should never hesitate to replace them if it’s the better option.
RV manufacturers design their vehicles with specific tire sizes. If you fit tires of the wrong size to your recreational vehicle, it’s just a matter of time before disaster strikes. To ensure road safety, consider size as your top priority while shopping for the best RV tires.
You’ll be able to easily determine the best RV tires size just by consulting the owner’s manual. It contains all important maintenance information for your specific RV. The owner’s manual has recommendations for tire size and other factors to help narrow your search.
Nowadays every tire for RV comes with ratings, including for weight, and speed. Considering the ratings ensures that you don’t end up with RV tires that can’t take the stress from your travels. The weight that is carried can wreak havoc on an inappropriately chosen tire.
You can check the maximum tire pressure allowed for a tire on its sidewall. It will be stated as, for instance: Max Load 236 kg (520 lbs) at 290 kPa (42 PSI). “42 PSI” is the maximum tire pressure. To make sure you don’t go above this number, use an inflation gauge. It is the only instrument that can correctly check your tire pressure.
An under-inflated tire cannot bear its load properly and will wear out faster due to larger contacts with the road surface. Meanwhile, an over-inflated tire will be more prone to damage, when it hit the pothole at high speeds.
Aside from sizes, weight ratings, and speed ratings, it is important to look into the sidewall strength of your RV tires. In many cases, this term is referred to as Load Range. Many seasoned RV owners make the choice to use light truck tires on their RVs as they traditionally offer better sidewall strength. Since light truck tires are built to bear a lot more of a beating than a regular RV tire, they can be great substitutes for your RV.
In the case you only go out in months with good weather then standard tires would be more than enough for most of the time. Nonetheless, if you wish to travel around the year, it’s strongly recommended that you pick all-seasons RV tires.
Often driving in the rain? Then you need to get tires optimized for wet conditions with purpose design thread patterns. Drop by forums of RV owners in order to determine the best travel trailer tires to buy in specific weather.
Similar to other purchases, it’s a good idea for you to get all the tires for your recreational vehicle straight from well-known manufacturers. Considering the highly competitive nature of the industry, a brand only becomes credible if it earns the trust of customers through quality products and responsive service.
Products from popular brands, particularly those with high RV tires ratings, are generally safer bets compared to those from lesser-known names. If you want tried and true RV tires with great post-purchase support, consider the following prestigious household names: Carlisle, Goodyear, Michelin, Trailer King, Dunlop, Gladiator, Boto Tyres.
Owning and running an RV is a substantial investment, which is why every single expense should be made wisely for what will last you a long time on the road and offer you the best camping experience.
Thanks to the wave of RV life in the last decades, the market for RV tires offers a wide range where you will be able to grab a product that matches your budget as well as your requirements. There is something for every RVer, from the more expensive, well-round, high-quality tires to the more affordable, yet still offers great value for money.

Know the Tire pressure- Before every trip, use an accurate tire pressure gauge to ensure proper inflation of each tire, including any spares. According to RV expert Mark Polk, the two leading causes of tire failure are improperly inflated tires and overloaded tires. Tires are designed to operate at a specific pressure, and driving your RV with under-inflated tires will cause the treads to break down much faster than they otherwise would. Tires should always be filled to match the RV manufacturer’s recommended pressure.
Add tire pressure valve extenders- If you have trouble manipulating the small, stubby valves on your tires, tire pressure valve extenders may make checking tire pressure easier. On vehicles with dual wheels or those with decorative hubs, it may be difficult to gain access to the valve stem. A longer and firmer metal valve stem will let you grip the valve firmly, and seat the tire gauge or compressor fitting snugly on top.
Inspect the sidewalls- Before hitting the road, take a few minutes to check for uneven wear in the tire’s tread. Look for cracks and splits in the sidewall, as these are early signs of aging. You should replace any tire that has sidewall cracks in excess of 2/32".
Pay attention to weight distribution and limits- Always be conscious of how much weight you’re carrying. In addition to staying below the maximum posted load limit, you should pack to distribute weight as evenly as possible, especially side to side, since this can contribute to uneven tire wear. When having your vehicle weighed, check each tire position individually to ensure you are not overloading any single tire.
Cover RV tires while in storage- When your vehicle is in storage, if at all possible lift the tires and cover them. This prevents UV radiation damage and slows the aging process. Keeping them off the ground relieves pressure and prevents water or oil from degrading the tire’s exterior.
Rotate tires regularly- Just as on your daily vehicle, you should also rotate the tires on your RV. Rotating tires encourages even wear, and also presents an opportunity to closely inspect each tire for damage.
Replace tires as needed- In general, most tires over six years old should be replaced. Even if they appear in good condition, the stress of carrying a loaded RV is much greater than that of a standard passenger automobile, and driving on sketchy tires is not worth the risk!

You should first check to see if the tires on your RV are rated properly according to the fully loaded weight of your vehicle. There are tire rating charts that are readily available for RV owners if needed.
The tread depth of your tires should be checked regularly. It should be at least 6/32 of an inch. That is deeper than the tread depth of a car tire, but then again, your RV is heavier and the tires take a lot more punishment. Tires that have less than 6/32 of an inch depth should be replaced as soon as possible.
You should also check to see if your RV wheels are properly inflated. The recommended tire pressures should be located on the sidewall. You can also check your RV manual or the website of the manufacturer if you need more information.
There are plenty of automotive shampoos you can buy to wash your RV with, and you can use that as well for washing your wheels. Soap and water will clear up a lot of the contaminants and grime, but sometimes you will need to buy wheel cleaners for more stubborn dirt.
If you’re storing away your RV for longer than 5-6 months at a time, you should know that this can actually stress out your wheels. It’s better to take out your RV for a short drive maybe once or twice every month. You can also rotate the tires to help prevent them from sidewall weathering and uneven wear and tear.
Using a pH-balanced wheel cleaner is always better than using acid-based products. For one, an acidic cleaner will oxidize the polished finish of your wheels. This is especially true for aftermarket wheels, so take note of this.
If you need to buy RV wheels and parts, look for suppliers or stores that have developed a reputation for service and quality. You’ll have a better shopping experience and get your money’s worth at the same time.
