Your vehicle must be compatible with the trailer brake controller harness. The 2-pin units are designed for brake controls that have an internal wiring port built in the back. Plug the brake control end of the wiring harness into the back of the brake control and the vehicle ends into the automobile's port.
Remove the vehicle's negative battery cable.
Decide where to mount the controller on the dash.
Make mounting holes for the bracket.
Secure the brake controller in place.
Wire the brake controller into a custom harness.
The first wire (black) runs to the vehicle's battery to supply power to the trailer connector. This wire is called the "12-volt hot lead."
The second wire (blue) runs to the brake controller to supply power to the trailer brakes. This wire is called the "brake wire."
The third wire (white) gets grounded to the vehicle's frame.
This wire is called the "ground wire."
The fourth wire (yellow) is hardwired to the vehicle's reverse lights. This wire is included with 7-way connectors but not 6-way connectors and can be tied off if it is not going to be used.
Disconnect the vehicle's negative battery cable.
Determine where to mount the controller on the dash.
Drill mounting holes for the bracket.
Fasten the brake controller into place.
Plugin the brake controller with a custom wiring harness.
Connecting the red wire on theΒ brake controller to the stoplight wire on the brake switch located above the brake pedal is the brake controller's red wire. Make sure the wires are connected correctly using a circuit tester. The one that shows a signal only when the brake pedal is pressed is what you need.
Without a brake controller, electric trailer brakes don't work. You will need a brake controller if your trailer is equipped with electric brakes. This is a hydraulic system that uses the weight and momentum of the trailer to activate the brakes.
Controllers for trailer brakes vary in how many brakes they can operate and how they operate. In reality, there are only two main types of brake controllers to choose from time-delayed or stable state and proportional.
Brake controllers are installed by disconnecting the vehicle battery, mounting the controller on the dashboard, and plugging in the unit with a vehicle-specific wiring harness. Additionally, you can splice in wiring for a brake controller if your vehicle is not equipped with a plug-and-play harness.
Almost all states require trailers with brakes to have a weight limit of 1,500 pounds. All-wheel axles must be equipped with brakes on trailers weighing over 3,000 pounds. Driving 4,000 pounds of trailers with no brakes is reckless, and could result in serious injuries or damage.
The majority of the time, this is fine and legal, but be sure not to overload your caravan, as it can be very dangerous, especially when overtaking on the highway. Lightweight trailers do not require brakes since the braking of theΒ vehicle towing them is sufficient.
U-Haul's larger trailers have surge brakes that activate when the trailer pushes against the vehicle ahead. Designed to reduce the wear on the tow vehicle's brakes and make stopping the combination easier, they reduce brake wear and make shopping easier. Surge brakes are ineffective once a trailer is swinging erratically, according to safety experts
Reese TowpowerΒ is another excellent trailer brake controller on the market. It is a proportional brake controller which can be used on one or four axles. The controller also features a boost. The trailer will be able to brake more quickly at the beginning, which will make it safer to ride with heavy loads.
