Finding Your Way Around the RV Kitchen

Finding Your Way Around the RV Kitchen

Whether you’re an RV newbie or a seasoned veteran full-timer, the RV kitchen can bring a whole new set of headaches or concerns. Whether it is space and storage issues, finding replacement parts or simply sorting out the differences between the appliances in your rig and your sticks and bricks, RV Part Shop is here to help. Let’s take a look at your RV kitchen - everything INCLUDING the kitchen sink!

RV Fridges

Just like their residential counterparts, RV refrigerators have come a long way since the days of the icebox. You can now find RV fridges with a storage capacity that rivals, if not exceeds, that of a residential (also referred to as domestic) refrigerator. Many RV’ers are choosing to replace their dealer installed RV fridge with a domestic version but there are a few things to consider.

RV fridges are built to be powered in a variety of ways, depending on your needs. The most common RV fridge type is the 2-way which operates on liquid propane or 110V power. Less common is the 3-way RV fridge which can run on LP, 110V or 12V. If you frequently boondock or live off the grid, non-electric options are definitely needed and these are not usually found in residential fridges.

RV fridges are also built for life on the road and designed to handle the bumps and movement. This means a more secure placement and heavier base. For those considering replacing with a domestic, safety and size should be high on your list to research.

RV Stoves & Ranges

If your RV is just for weekend use, it’s not likely that you’ll be whipping up a batch of cookies at the campsite. If you’re a full-timer or a more diehard user, there’s absolutely no reason that your RV stove and range shouldn’t be used just like the one at home! Depending on the size of your rig, you will likely have at least a two-burner stove to work with. Larger models will include an RV oven.

One of the biggest complaints from RV oven users is that the temperature can be inconsistent. Most RV bakers NEVER trust the temperature dial and use an oven-safe thermometer to monitor the degrees.

Another common complaint is the RV ovens tend to burn everything at the bottom, making for overly crispy cookies and crusts. The easiest way to combat this is to use a pizza stone or baking stone on the shelf to regulate the heat and insulate against the oven’s flame.

Size is another factor to consider when it comes to your RV stove or oven. You will need to be aware of the dimensions and plan accordingly when stocking your cupboards with cookware, bakeware, frying pans, etc.

If you prefer cooking outside or just want the extra counter space, you can always use a cooktop cover or cutting board.

RV Microwave

If your on-the-road cooking style veers more to the “heat and eat” direction, you’ll definitely get lots of use out of an RV microwave. Unlike RV fridges and stoves, a household microwave will work just fine but size and space are definite factors to consider in your search. Many RV’s do include over the range or convection microwave option.

RV Sinks

One of the biggest concern about RV kitchen sinks is that most manufacturers use a standard, thin plastic that just isn’t durable. If you’re looking to upgrade, RV Part Shop has a great selection of RV sinks and other fixtures in a variety of shapes and sizes.

RV faucets are also often replaced with a more durable and functional counterpart. Swapping out the faucet is a fairly simple procedure, much like at home, and can reduce the number of repairs and headaches down the road.
